How to stop overthinking — the brain dump method

Your head is the worst place to store a to-do list. Here's the brain dump method that actually quiets the noise, and how to do it in 5 minutes.

Overthinking is what happens when your brain keeps holding the same 12 tabs open. You're not lazy. You're not broken. You're just trying to remember and decide at the same time — and that's the hardest job a brain can do.

Why overthinking happens

Your working memory holds about 4 things at once. You probably have 20 in your head right now. So your brain keeps cycling through them, afraid you'll forget. That's the loop.

The brain dump method

A brain dump is the act of getting everything out of your head into one place. Tasks, ideas, worries, half-decisions — all of it. The goal isn't to organize. The goal is to empty.

  • Set 5 minutes on a timer.
  • Talk or write everything that comes up. No filter, no order.
  • Stop when the timer ends, even if there's more.
  • Now look at the list. Circle the 3 that matter today.
  • Do the first one. Just the first one.

Why this quiets the noise

Once it's written down, your brain stops guarding it. The loop breaks. You don't have to remember anymore — the page does.
